The European Union Election Observer Mission (EU-EOM) to Nigeria for the 2023 general elections has identified six areas for improvement in the country’s democratic and good governance.

Mr. Barry Andrews, the mission’s Chief Observer, stated this yesterday in Abuja during a presentation of the mission’s priority recommendations based on its observations of the general elections held on February 25, March 18, and April 15.

While there were 23 recommendations, he said there were six priority areas, including ambiguities in the law, the establishment of a publicly accountable process for selecting INEC members, and ensuring real-time publication and access to election results.

The report also emphasized the need for media practitioners to be protected, while condemning gender discrimination in elective and appointed positions, as well as impunity for electoral offenses.
