The English Football Association has reacted to the dismissal of Lauren James in the round of 16 tie against super falcons of Nigeria in the ongoing FIFA women world cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
James was given the marching order after she received a straight red card in the second half of the match for stamping on Michelle Alozie.
The Chelsea forward is handed an automatic one-game ban, which could be extended via FIFA’s disciplinary process.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, the English FA said the action of Lauren was unlike her and that she’s contrite about the incident.
An FA spokesman said: “Lauren is really sorry for her actions which led to the red card and is full of remorse. It is wholly out of character for her.
“We will be supporting Lauren throughout and will be putting forward representation on her behalf. We fully respect FIFA’s disciplinary process and will not be making any further comment until after any decision has been made.”
The FA are now awaiting the length of her suspension from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
Earlier in the tournament, Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun served a three-match ban after being sent off during the Super Falcons’ first group-stage match.
