Labour Party reacts to Election Tribunal’s judgment

Nigeria’s Labour Party (LP) says it rejects Wednesday’s judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal Court (PEPT) in the party’s challenge of the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25, 2023 poll and will make its next move known shortly.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) sitting in the nation’s capital, Abuja, had ruled that the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, failed to prove their case against President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The tribunal headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani, ruled that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi could not prove that he won the election.

The tribunal also dismissed the petition of the LP and Peter Obi regarding the alleged requirement of winning 25 per cent of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, as a requirement for winning the presidential election.

Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, in a statement after the verdict of the Tribunal, Wednesday, said justice was not served in the petitions of the party against the APC and Tinubu.

Ifoh further said the party was consulting with its lawyers on the matter and would soon make its next line of action known once it receives a certified true copy of the judgement.

He claimed that the judgment as passed was not reflective of the law or the will of the Nigerian people.

“Nigerians were witnesses to the electoral robbery that took place on February 25, 2023, which was globally condemned but the Tribunal in its wisdom refused to accept the obvious,” Ifoh said in the statement.

“What is at stake is democracy and we will not relent until the people’s will prevails.

“We salute the doggedness of our team of lawyers who fearlessly exposed the rot in our system. We can only weep for democracy in Nigeria but we refuse to give up on Nigeria.

“Details of the party’s position will be presented after consultation with our lawyers after the Certified True Copy of the judgment is made available to us,” the statement concluded.
