The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) is considering creating a museum in Maiduguri, Borno, dedicated to the Boko Haram insurgency.

The museum would be a collaboration between the NEDC and the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

The managing director of the commission, Mohammed Alkali, shared this plan during an event to commemorate the 2023 International Day of Peace.

The museum aims to showcase the physical aspects of the insurgency so that future generations can understand the conflict.

Mr. Alkali also highlighted the NEDC’s commitment to supporting the victims of insurgency and mentioned their involvement in the development of the University’s Centre for Counter-Terrorism.

The vice-chancellor of UNIMAID, Aliyu Shugaba, expressed appreciation for the NEDC’s support in peacebuilding initiatives, including the construction of the Centre for Peace and Counter-Terrorism Research.

Mr Shugaba said the university did not close for a day because of the insurgency, adding, “if it had closed, it would be a sign of defeat and surrender to the terrorists’ ideology.”
