Alhassan Ado Doguwa, former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, emphasized that winning an election is not solely determined by the number of votes but also hinges on adhering to the rules of the electoral process. Doguwa shared his perspective on the ongoing controversies surrounding the 2023 elections in Kano State during an interview on Channels TV on Wednesday.

In his statement, Doguwa highlighted the significance of elections in a democratic setting, emphasizing that they revolve around established rules and regulations. He underscored the importance of contesting an election within the framework of these rules to ensure its fairness.

Doguwa stated, “Winning an election can be contesting to win an election under the laid down rules and regulations as provided in the electoral act and in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is also part of what you must have to abide by to win a free and fair election.”

He added that free and fair elections go beyond ballot counting, addressing the complexities that may arise, such as illegal votes. Doguwa called for an acceptance of the fact that navigating the nuances of politics and democracy involves a commitment to following the rules of the game.

Tinubu meets King Charles in Dubai

President Bola Tinubu met with the British monarch, His Majesty, King Charles III, on Thursday, on the sidelines of the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

In a post on his X account, the President said he had a productive engagement with the 75-year-old monarch.

“I had a productive meeting with His Majesty, King Charles III of England who is also the Head of the Commonwealth, and a passionate climate advocate,” Tinubu wrote.

“The meeting was a significant step in strengthening the partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and I am optimistic about the positive impact our joint efforts will have on our planet’s future as we look forward to setting an equitable global standard for environmental stewardship at COP28.”
