Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, ex-governor of Niger State, asserts that during his initial term, he successfully expelled Boko Haram leaders Abubakar Shekau and Abu Qaqa from the state. Speaking at the 2023 annual public lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Aliyu attributed his actions to preventing Niger State from becoming a Boko Haram stronghold.

Addressing security challenges in Nigeria, Aliyu emphasized the importance of strategic planning and budgeting. He suggested that eradicating negative statistics, such as the 20 million out-of-school children, is essential to combatting issues like terrorism and banditry. Aliyu highlighted the need for a concerted effort to change Nigeria’s narrative, particularly its status as the global poverty capital.

Detailing his past efforts, Aliyu recounted a security challenge involving a group of individuals in Mokwa local government. He claimed they multiplied from nine to 7,000 people, engaging in criminal activities. With the support of late President Musa Yar’adua, Aliyu stated that he dispersed the group after compensating and providing transportation to their destinations within and outside Nigeria. This action, he believes, played a pivotal role in averting Niger State from becoming a foundation for Boko Haram.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, expressed optimism that the 2024 budget, once passed by the National Assembly, would usher in a transformative era aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Malagi also pledged support for the development of NIPR, of which he is a member.
