  • PDP chieftain Anabs Sara-Igbe claims that the defection of 27 Rivers State Assembly members to the APC aims to advance Governor Fubara’s impeachment
  • Contradicting this, Assembly member George Alabo argues the defection addresses internal PDP divisions, unrelated to Governor Wike

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Rivers State, Anabs Sara-Igbe, has asserted that the defection of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a strategic move to advance the impeachment process of Governor Siminialayi Fubara. Sara-Igbe expressed this viewpoint during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

The mass defection occurred on Monday when 27 out of 32 members of the Rivers State Assembly left the ruling PDP to join the APC. Sara-Igbe, in the interview, claimed that the defection was orchestrated to pave the way for the impeachment of Governor Fubara. He emphasized the need for peace in the state and criticized comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which, according to Sara-Igbe, are detrimental to peace.

Sara-Igbe stated, “The movement of these 27 members of the house to APC is a plot to ensure that they go ahead with the impeachment process. They need to understand that they are the members of the House, but the state itself is more concerned with the development that is going on in the state. And we don’t want any action that will cause more problems for the state.”

Contrarily, a member of the state House of Assembly, George Alabo, countered the narrative, stating that the defection was a response to divisions within the PDP that the party leadership in the state failed to address. He clarified that the defection had nothing to do with Nyeson Wike, who, according to Alabo, remains a member of the PDP.

Alabo explained, “We had a strong division in the PDP. Our action is in response to these divisions which the party leadership in the state has failed to address. We have the backing of our constituents. We have their votes. It’s about their future. Let us treat things in isolation. Wike is still a member of the PDP.”
