The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has emphasized the continued ban on the sale and unauthorized use of fireworks, colloquially known as “knockout” or “banger,” within the state. The directive aims to ensure public safety and prevent potential criminal activities associated with fireworks.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on behalf of the commissioner, it was highlighted that the dangers linked to fireworks include their potential use by criminals to carry out illicit activities, creating tension in the community.
The statement further stressed the inherent risks of igniting fireworks, citing the high likelihood of causing bodily injuries and fire outbreaks, especially during the harmattan season. The commissioner warned dealers and fireworks users to cease their activities immediately.
To enforce the ban, the commissioner called on Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units within the Command to take necessary measures. He urged parents and guardians to discourage their children from purchasing and igniting fireworks, sternly warning that violators would face legal consequences.
Wishing residents a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, the commissioner urged them to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and prompt in reporting criminal activities to the nearest police station.
