Yesterday, the $19 billion Dangote Refinery received a shipment of one million barrels of crude oil, marking a total delivery of approximately three million barrels.

This development ignites optimism towards ending the importation of petroleum products, alleviating the associated foreign exchange burden.

The oil, currently being discharged into the facility, originated from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO).

The management has outlined plans to commence the refining of diesel and aviation fuel by mid-January 2024, with the refining of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to follow later.

Highlighting the refinery’s capabilities, they expressed confidence in meeting 100 percent of Nigeria’s domestic demand for gasoline, diesel, kerosene, aviation fuel, and even catering to the global market through exports.

The Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, previously affirmed that the refinery is expected to operate at full capacity, processing 650,000 barrels per day by the conclusion of 2024. This monumental step is anticipated to generate numerous positive outcomes, including job creation, supplier opportunities, capacity building, empowerment, and technology transfer to Nigerians.

He had said: “We do not want to start our refinery with foreign goods; we want to start with Nigerian crude. We’re more than ready and you will see our gasoline products soon.”
