Man to die by hanging for robbing commercial motorcyclist

  • According to the case file, Tayo dispossessed one Abdullahi Chali Yahaya of his motorcycle and also killed him.

One Tunde Tayo has been sentenced to life imprisonment and death by hanging in Niger State.

Tayo of Angwan Roka, Maitumbi in Minna was convicted and sentenced by Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed of Minna High Court 4.

He was arraigned in court by Jude Thaddeus Akaeze, head of the Legal Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department (SCIID) of the Niger State Police Command.

He stood trial for two counts of armed robbery and culpable homicide, punishable under Section 298 (C) of the Penal Code of Niger State, 1989. He was found guilty of the two charges.

According to the case file, Tayo dispossessed one Abdullahi Chali Yahaya of his motorcycle and also killed him.

The First Information Report read: “Tunde Tayo of Angwan Roka Maitumbi, Minna, Niger State, on 13th September 2018 at New FM area Minna, within the jurisdiction of this court, did commit robbery; conspired with others at large, while armed with dangerous weapons, lured and robbed one Abdullahi Chali Yahaya (now late) of Angwan Rahama, Bosso Low Cost, of his Bajaj motorcycle, valued at N215,000 and later killed him.”

The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Mohammed, after reviewing the evidence tendered before him, averred that the convict was found guilty of the crimes punishable under Section 298 (C) of the Penal Code and Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Niger State, punishable with death and life imprisonment, respectively.

Justice Mohammed told the convict: ” With the evidence before me, the case of armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable with death has been established against you and you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment for the case of armed robbery and death by hanging for the case of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code.”

He added that the sentence would run concurrently, adding, “May the Lord have mercy on your soul.”
