  • The Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women celebrates Work Hijab Day, emphasizing hijab as a symbol of freedom and strength
  • Zulai Nuhu, the head of the group, asserts that hijab is a choice reflecting the empowerment, focus, and vision of Muslim women

The Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women delivered a resounding message on Work Hijab Day, emphasizing that wearing hijab is a symbol of freedom and strength, debunking the pervasive misconception that it signifies oppression.

Zulai Nuhu, the head of the group, conveyed this sentiment while celebrating under the theme #VeiledInStrength; Nuhu aimed to educate non-Muslims about the empowering nature of hijab for its wearers.

Contrary to the stereotype portraying hijab wearers as subdued and voiceless, Nuhu asserted that the hijab is donned by choice and reflects the strength, empowerment, focus, and vision of Muslim women.

“We are veiled in strength. We are not oppressed. We wear hijab by choice and strength, focus and vision,” she declared.

Highlighting the integral role of hijab in the identity of Muslim women, Nuhu emphasized its representation of their ability to actively engage in all public spheres. Beyond being a personal choice, hijab is a guaranteed right protected by laws, not a symbol of oppression.

The group’s focus extends to advocating for the recognition and protection of the right to wear hijab without fear of harm or prejudice. Nuhu expressed the commitment to spreading this message through various channels until it gains widespread understanding and acceptance.

Seeking support from Media Trust and the general populace, Nuhu urged collective efforts to demonstrate that the crusade for non-discrimination against hijab users is not a solitary endeavor. Together, they aim to foster greater acceptance and understanding of the cultural and religious significance of hijab.

The Coalition, comprising organizations like FOMWAN, NASFAT, Women in Da’awah, JADAFIA, Criterion, Ansaruddeen, MESH, Muslim schools in Abuja, and others, remains dedicated to addressing challenges faced by women, particularly within the Muslim community.
