  • He added that the committee would also collaborate with tertiary institution administrators to strengthen security measures and implement stricter disciplinary codes.
  • Other functions of the committee, he said, was to provide support and rehabilitation services to students struggling with addiction, mental health issues, or the aftermath of victimisation.

President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step in addressing the prevalent issue of social vices within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Major General Suleiman Kazaure (rtd), the former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), along with four other distinguished individuals, has been appointed to lead a special committee tasked with this crucial mission.

In an official statement released on Sunday by Hon. Sunday Asefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, the necessity of this initiative was underscored.

The committee’s formation comes in response to the alarming rise in social vices such as drug abuse, sexual harassment, cultism, cybercrime, and academic dishonesty, all of which impede both academic progress and personal development among students.

Asefon emphasized that these vices not only compromise academic performance but also jeopardize the overall safety and well-being of students, casting a shadow over the conducive learning environment of tertiary institutions.

The establishment of this special committee reflects President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the future of Nigerian students and underscores the imperative for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to tackling these societal challenges.
