  • PDP in Ondo State considers consensus candidate for governorship election amid 10 aspirants, with April 25 primary election scheduled
  • State party leadership aims for consensus candidate; if unsuccessful, free, fair, and transparent primary elections will be conducted

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State is contemplating nominating a consensus candidate for the state’s forthcoming November 16 governorship election. This decision follows the announcement by the opposition party’s national leadership, setting April 25 as the primary election date in Ondo State.

With no less than 10 governorship aspirants vying for the PDP ticket, the state party leadership, after consultations with some of the aspirants, expressed willingness to proceed with primary elections only if efforts to reach a consensus candidate prove unsuccessful.

Kennedy Peretei, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, confirmed that all aspirants exhibited enthusiasm and pledged full support to the eventual flag bearer of the party.

Acting chairman Tola Alabere assured aspirants of the party’s preference for a consensus arrangement but emphasized that if consensus-building fails, the party will conduct a free, fair, and transparent primary election.

One of the aspirants, Sola Ebiseni, disclosed that party leaders convened the aspirants to ensure a harmonious campaign atmosphere as the election date approached. He highlighted efforts by party stalwarts, including former Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the State Working Committee, to foster unity among aspirants and promote a peaceful primary process.

Aside from Ebiseni, other aspirants present at the meeting included Agboola Ajayi, Bamidele Akingboye, Adeolu Akinwunmi, Bosun Arebuwa, and John Ola Mafo.
