  • Fulani groups in Plateau State demand compensation and urge security agencies to recover stolen livestock following the attack

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has instructed security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the killing of a 17-year-old Fulani herdsman and 35 cows in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

In a statement released by his Director of Press and Publicity, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of bringing the perpetrators of Tuesday’s heinous crime to justice.

The incident occurred as herders were grazing in Nafan village, Fan District, and Doruwa Babuje in Ropp District of Barkin-Ladi LGA when unknown gunmen opened fire, resulting in the death of one herdsman and injuries to another. Additionally, 35 cows were killed in the attack.

Expressing condolences to the deceased’s family, Governor Mutfwang condemned the lawless acts, stating that they undermine efforts to restore peace and promote harmonious coexistence in the state.

Meanwhile, Fulani groups in Plateau State have called on both the state and federal governments, as well as security agencies, to compensate herdsmen who suffered losses during the attack.

In a statement issued in Jos on Thursday, the groups decried the killing of their members and the rustling and killing of 104 cows and 30 sheep. They urged security agents to recover the stolen livestock.

According to the group’s President, Garba Abdullahi Muhammad, and Secretary, Adam Yakubu, Abubakar Abdulmumin was killed, while Abdussalam Ibrahim sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Mainasara Hospital in Barkin Ladi.

The attackers, described as Berom militia from Nafan and Nyerwei villages in Fan District, reportedly stormed the area on motorcycles, opening fire indiscriminately while the Fulani herdsmen were grazing.

As law-abiding citizens, the group called on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators responsible for the attacks, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives and valuable livestock. They estimated the value of the lost cattle at approximately N105,000,000.00 and the sheep at N3,000,000.00.
