  • Manchester City’s title defense hit as goalkeeper Ederson sidelined for up to four weeks due to thigh injury
  • Ederson expected to miss crucial matches, including clash with league leaders Arsenal, FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle

Manchester City’s Premier League title defence has taken a significant hit with the news that Ederson’s injury will sideline him for up to four weeks. The goalkeeper sustained a thigh injury during Sunday’s draw with Liverpool, casting doubt on his availability for crucial upcoming matches, including the encounter with league leaders Arsenal on March 31.

Ederson suffered the injury while fouling striker Darwin Nunez, leading to a penalty for Liverpool. Despite initially continuing after receiving treatment, he was eventually substituted for Stefan Ortega.

The 30-year-old Brazilian is expected to miss City’s next Premier League fixture against Arsenal, the FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle this Saturday, and subsequent international duty.

City have confirmed Ederson’s unavailability for international duty to the Brazilian FA after assessing the extent of his injury.

In Ederson’s absence, German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, 31, will likely step in for upcoming matches against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. Ortega previously deputized for Ederson during City’s victory against Newcastle in January and expressed confidence in his ability to fill the role during his time on the pitch at Anfield.
