  • Labour Party’s NWC disputes NLC’s dismissal of National Chairman Abure and dissolution of the committee, citing lack of recognition
  • LP warns of legal action against NLC, asserting commitment to abiding by the law, following NLC’s nullification of party decisions

The Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has rebuffed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s dismissal of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the committee’s dissolution.

In a statement issued Tuesday by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party asserted that the NLC lacks recognition by the LP Constitution. It warned that it would pursue legal recourse if necessary, underscoring its commitment to abiding by the law.

The NLC recently nullified Abure’s reinstatement as the LP National Chairman and the formation of the NWC following a national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. In a communiqué from the NLC Political Commission Stakeholders meeting in Abuja, a vote of no confidence was passed on the convention and its leadership.

The communiqué was signed by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, former NLC President Abdulwahed Omar, and Labour Party Board of Trustees Chairman S.O.Z. Ejiofor also endorsed the formation of a Transition Committee to temporarily oversee the party’s affairs.

In response, the Abure-led NWC expressed dismay at the NLC’s attempt to usurp authority beyond its mandate. Ifoh emphasized that the NLC, unrecognized by the LP, lacks the prerogative to convene stakeholder meetings or make decisions binding on a legitimately constituted party leadership.
