Airforce cadet dies in popular Abia hotel swimming pool

One Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyeomereneche, an Air Force cadet, has died in Abia State.

He reportedly died in the swimming pool of Damgrete Hotel in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on Tuesday.

A source familiar with the matter said the deceased went to the facility to swim at a time the pool was undergoing renovation.

It is however immediately not clear if the victim was informed about the ongoing renovation exercise before he dived into the pool.

His body was later recovered by men of the Abia State Fire Service and later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.

He was rescued with his swimming trunks, indicating that he had prepared to swim before the unfortunate incident happened.

His whereabouts became unknown at about 6:37 pm on Tuesday but was found around 9:58 pm. The swimming pool was said to be in a deplorable condition, making the rescue effort painstaking.

According to reports, there was equally no divers to assist in the rescue effort till the arrival of men of the state fire service.

The Army Public Relations Officer of 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Lt. Innocent Omale confirmed the incident.

According to him, the late Onyeomereneche was said to be hanging out with his friends when he suddenly decided to jump into the swimming pool.

As at the time of this report, investigation is still ongoing on the circumstances surrounding the death of the cadet.
