  • United States pledges $3 million in food aid to northeastern Nigeria amid food scarcity crisis, aiming to address insecurity

The federal government has revealed that Nigeria needs approximately 312,000 metric tons of seed to attain food security, sufficiency, and global stability in 2024.

This announcement came alongside news from the United States, stating its intervention in the country’s food scarcity crisis. Plans are underway to provide $3 million worth of food to people in the northeastern region.

Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed this during a High-Level Stakeholders’ Forum on Seed System Development in Abuja. Represented by Dr. Haruna Suleiman, the National Food and Strategic Reserve Director, the minister outlined critical pathways to address Nigeria’s food security challenges.

Mr. Prakash Silwal, the Chief of Party/Principal Specialist at IITA, stated in an interview that USAID has funded IITA and its partners over the last five years to work in the North East, tackling food insecurity.
