  • The State FRSC Sector Commander, Paul Okpe, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Benin City.

No fewer than 42 people lost their lives to auto crashes in four months in Edo State, the State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has said.

According to FRSC, the road accidents happened between January and April 2024.

The State FRSC Sector Commander, Paul Okpe, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Benin City.

Okpe said 57 accidents were recorded across the state in the period under review, adding that 22 persons were killed in January, four in February, 11 in July and five in April.

He added that 537 passengers were involved in the accidents, with 42 dead and 206 injured, while others escaped unhurt.

Okpe attributed the crashes to overspeeding, brake failure, route violations, dangerous driving, and the use of phones while driving, among other causes.

He, however, called on motorists to drive with care and imbibe a safety culture on the road to stay alive.

Meanwhile, Okpe has sought the support of stakeholders in the transport sector to assist the agency in its mandate to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities in the state.

The FRSC Sector Commander, who made the call during a meeting with transporters in Benin City, opined that the meeting was aimed at sensitising stakeholders in the transport industry on the need to support the Corps in reducing road traffic crashes

“We are here to educate and sensitise drivers, owners of trailers and trucks, and passengers on the need to imbibe a safety culture while using the road.

“This is also part of the Corps Marshal’s effort to mitigate road traffic crashes and fatalities involving trailers conveying goods, animals and people,” he said.

He asserted that the sensitisation would be carried out across the state to ensure that all road users in Edo imbibe a safety culture while on the road.
