  • The members of the state assembly made the decision to amend the law during plenary on Tuesday, May 21.
  • Former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Emir Sanusi and divided the Kano emirate into five different emirates.

The Kano state house of assembly has resolved to review the law that divided the state into five emirates.

In May 2019, the assembly approved an amendment to the Kano State Emirate Council Law, leading to the decentralization of power and the creation of five emirates: Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.

This move was widely seen as a way to reduce the influence of then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed the bill into law, and later deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano in March 2020.

At the plenary session on Tuesday, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala moved a motion to amend the law, stating that it was not conceived in good faith and expressing concerns over the creation of new emirates.

The house subsequently resolved to amend the law.

The move to revisit the law comes after Abba Yusuf, the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), won the Kano governorship election.

In January, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP presidential candidate, announced that Yusuf would revisit the creation of new emirates by the previous administration.

The amendment process is expected to be closely watched, as it may have implications for the power dynamics in the state and the future of the emirates.
