Mutfwang grants pardon to 13 inmates on Democracy Day

The pardon was granted to commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

  • The Governor emphasised that the beneficiaries have shown remorse for their crimes, based on the recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang exercised his constitutional powers on Wednesday by granting clemency to 13 inmates, setting them free from prison.

The act was based on recommendations from the Plateau State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The pardon was granted to commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, I, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Governor of Plateau State, Nigeria, after consultation with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, do hereby exercise my power of Prerogative of Mercy.”

“Among the beneficiaries, Bitrus Gonkir, Umar Adams, Monday Pam, and Jibrin Ibrahim received absolute pardon.

“While Victor Pam will serve 1 year and 8 months from the approval date, Daniel Umar 2 years and 11 months, Husaini Ya’u for 2 years, and Dauda Joshua for 5 years.

“Additionally, Moses John will serve 1 year and 2 months from the approval date; Nanfa Yusuf, Harisu Abdullahi, and Binsing Nden had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.”

The Governor emphasised that the beneficiaries have shown remorse for their crimes, based on the recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

He urged the public to focus on dialogue and reconciliation for a progressive and prosperous state, highlighting democracy as the best model for addressing national challenges.
