The police command in Lagos said that a yet-to-be-identified 61-year-old man has lost his life after being electrocuted during the flood incident.

Police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the death in a post he shared on his X handle @benHundeyin on Thursday.

He said the incident happened on Wednesday during a downpour in the Orile-Iganmu area.

“During the rain yesterday in Orile-Iganmu, a 61-year-old man, while wading through the floods, held on to a street light pole and sadly got electrocuted,” the police spokesperson said.

Hundeyin urged the public to always stay safe.

In another news, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has mandated the desilting of drainages along federal roads in Lagos State to alleviate highway flooding.

This was revealed in a statement by the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, on Thursday.

The directive followed a 10-hour downpour on Wednesday that disrupted business and commercial activities in Lagos and Ogun states.

The flooding caused the collapse of a two-storey building in Mushin, halted vehicular movement, and affected thousands of residents, preventing pupils from attending school in various parts of the states.

However, Kesha noted that Lagos State was not experiencing widespread flooding.

She, however, admitted that “localised flooding” affected certain sections of federal roads within the city, hence the need to clear the drainages.

She said, “We wish to clarify that contrary to some reports, Lagos is not experiencing widespread submergence from floodwaters.

“However, the ministry acknowledges that localised flooding has affected certain sections of federal roads within the city.

“The minister has directed the desilting of drains along federal roads in the state with a view to deflooding the highways .

“Our teams are currently deployed to assess the situation while the desilting of drains along the affected roads are currently being carried out.

“The ministry understands the inconvenience caused by these flash floods and is committed to eliminating the disruptions caused thereafter.”
