  • According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in 2024, windstorms affected more than 9,733 houses in Adamawa
  • Residents living in flood-prone areas are advised to relocate to safer places or higher ground for their safety, and to avoid drinking or washing clothes with floodwater to prevent a cholera outbreak

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in 2024, windstorms affected more than 9,733 houses in Adamawa.

The NEMA Head of Operations in Adamawa, Mr. Ladan Ayuba, disclosed this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola. He stated that the agency had assessed the affected Local Government Areas, including Jada, Hong, Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, and Fufore.

Ayuba also urged residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer places or higher ground for their safety. This warning was issued in response to predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), indicating that Adamawa is among the states expected to experience flooding in 2024.

He highlighted that the areas likely to be affected by flooding include Fufore, Yola-North, Yola-South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde, and Gombi LGAs.

“For your safety, please avoid flood-prone areas, stay on higher ground, and stop dumping refuse in waterways,” Ayuba advised.

He also encouraged residents to listen to the radio for relevant information and follow the agency’s instructions. Additionally, he cautioned against drinking or washing clothes with floodwater to avoid a cholera outbreak.

“People should only return home when the authorities say it is safe because we are experiencing floods due to the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon,” he added.

Ayuba mentioned that sensitization efforts are ongoing and called on traditional leaders to support government initiatives by ensuring the message reaches their subjects, particularly those without access to the media.
