  • On October 5, 2023, the federal government agreed with the NLC and TUC to pay a N35,000 wage award to federal workers to mitigate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal

Alex Otti, the governor of Abia, clarified that the state government has not received any funds from the federal government for the implementation of the N35,000 wage award.

Otti made this statement during a meeting with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council in Abia.

On October 5, 2023, the federal government agreed with the NLC and TUC to pay a N35,000 wage award to federal workers to mitigate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal. The federal government also committed to continuing this payment until a new minimum wage is established in 2024.

While some states have agreed to adopt the federal government’s wage award plan at the state level, others have stated they cannot afford it.

Otti emphasized that reports suggesting states have received funds to pay the N35,000 wage award are false and incorrect.

“There has been misleading stories all over the place that the Federal government gave monies to the state governments for the implementation of the wage award,” he said.
