The Nigerian police in Maiduguri averted a potential disaster on Friday night when their anti-bomb squad neutralised an improvised explosive device (IED) discovered near a primary healthcare center.

Local residents found the device outside Mala Kachalla General Hospital on Baga Road around midnight. Quick thinking and prompt action by the police ensured the IED was safely deactivated, preventing any harm to people or property.

This incident is the latest in a series of IED discoveries in the area, including one at a nearby primary school just a week ago.

Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, Acting GOC 7 Division Maimalari Cantonment, announced that the military is ramping up awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of IEDs in Maiduguri and Jere.

General Haruna noted that the increased use of IEDs by terrorists is due to their simplicity and effectiveness. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or devices to the military immediately, stressing the importance of community cooperation in preventing IED-related incidents.
