  • Rivers APC uncertain about Amaechi’s political status, says he became incommunicado after 2022 APC primary and presidential election
  • Okocha clarifies Wike is not an APC member and does not influence party decisions in Rivers State

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed uncertainty about former state governor Rotimi Amaechi’s current political status. Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers, shared this information on Tuesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja while briefing the press on the party’s state of affairs.

Amaechi, who placed second in the 2022 APC primary that selected Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate, has become silent in the political sphere. It has been noted that he did not campaign for the party during last year’s general elections.

When questioned about Amaechi’s active membership in the APC, Okocha said, “I was Chief of Staff to Rotimi Amaechi. Recall that he got into law school at one point, and after that one year in law school, he became incommunicado. You also know that he disappeared into thin air after the presidential primary election. So, whether he is still a party member or not, I wouldn’t know because he didn’t show up in all the meetings we called.”

Okocha continued, “I give you an example of a meeting we called for all the former governors and ministers. He (Amaechi) sent a message to the party’s secretary and warned him never to dare send him a message about the party again. So, when you meet him, ask him where he belongs. For me, I don’t know where he belongs.”

Addressing a question about the influence of former governor and current Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, on the Rivers State APC, Okocha clarified that Wike is not a card-carrying member of the APC and does not influence its decisions.

At the time of reporting, Amaechi could not be reached for comments.
