A severe Nigerian Army operation in Awomama community, Imo State, has resulted in reported casualties and injuries among residents.
Footage shows soldiers arriving in five heavily armoured vehicles and using explosives on homes. Eyewitnesses report at least 13 civilians, including men, women, and children, killed. Many others were injured or fled, with properties worth billions of Naira destroyed.
The army stated that on July 20, 2024, troops of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA, alongside other security agencies, raided and cleared camps of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The operation took place in Ezioha-Eziama Village, Imo State, targeting the ESN camp of commander Lucio Agu, also known as B44. The army claimed to have neutralized two IPOB/ESN commanders, Asari and Mazi, and recovered weapons and other items.
In a simultaneous raid, troops destroyed another IPOB/ESN camp at Ezere Forest, resulting in irredentists fleeing and leaving behind weapons and equipment.
The Joint Task Force South East Operation UDOKA has appealed to the public for cooperation and information to help eliminate criminals in the region.
