  • Senator Barau Jibrin urged protest organizers to reconsider their plans, emphasizing that President Tinubu needs more time to address challenges
  • He warned that protests could disrupt the fragile peace in Nigeria, citing the risks of violence seen in other countries

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has appealed to the organizers of the planned nationwide protest to reconsider their decision to ensure that the fragile peace in the country remains undisturbed.

As the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is genuinely working to address the country’s challenges.

In a statement by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the deputy senate president, urged the protest promoters to give the government more time to implement the ambitious programs and policies outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda for the country’s socio-economic development.

He highlighted that since the government was inaugurated on May 29, 2023, significant efforts have been made to restore the nation’s glory and guide it to a path of progress and prosperity for all.

“As we all know, one year is insufficient to address the country’s decades of challenges. Various interventions have been rolled out, and this administration is conceiving more. Short, medium, and long-term measures are being put in place to tackle the challenges that have been with us for decades,” he said.

Senator Barau pointed to President Tinubu’s signing of the North West and South East Development Commissions bills into law as one measure to address the challenges facing all parts of the country.

He also cautioned the protest promoters to consider how peaceful demonstrations in countries like Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan turned violent and set those nations back.

“Against this backdrop, I urge everyone to reflect deeply on the problem and reconsider the idea of a protest. There is a risk that the protest could be hijacked.

“This is our country; we have no place to go other than the Federal Republic of Nigeria bequeathed to us by our forefathers. Exercise more patience and allow for more time. We will get it right. The new Government’s efforts will yield the desired results by the grace of God,” he said.
