  • Senator Mohammed Sani Musa called for an emergency summit of northern leaders to address the region’s challenges amid ongoing protests
  • Musa emphasized the need for holistic solutions to issues like security, education, and agriculture in Northern Nigeria during the summit

Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (Niger East, APC) has called for an emergency summit of northern leaders to discuss and resolve the region’s current situation.

The call follows the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protest, which has resulted in the deaths of several people and the destruction of numerous public properties, particularly in the country’s north.

Some protesters flew the Russian Federation flag to call for its intervention, while others demanded military intervention.

In an apparent response to the state of the nation, particularly in the North, Senator Sani said in a statement signed on Wednesday that the summit, which has become more urgent and necessary, should aim to find “holistic, common solutions to the numerous challenges facing Northern Nigeria in all facets, such as security, education, agriculture and food security, and socio-economic development.”

“I would like to appeal to our conscience regarding the state of affairs in Northern Nigeria. As a matter of urgency and necessity, I propose that we convene an emergency summit of the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, all Northern governors, senators, Members of the House of Representatives, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Honourable Ministers, Speakers of the Houses of Assembly of the 19 Northern states, and thought leaders, including recognised youth group leaders’, he stated.

He said, “We must face these challenges head-on, without discrimination or sentiment.” Today, God has given us these responsibilities, and we must one day answer for our actions and inactions. Our actions will be judged as leaders in this life and the afterlife.

“We have the potential to be the re-engineered architects of a new Northern Nigeria, which will contribute to Nigeria’s growth and renew our people’s hope. We must band together to support our dear President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in his efforts to rediscover Nigeria and transform it into one of the world’s most prosperous and advanced nations.

“The North has only one option: to embrace the Renewed Hope vision of the current democratic government to benefit our people and future. I am submitting this as a suggestion for my respected colleagues to consider.”

In July, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani stated that northern leaders are to blame for the region’s problems, which include poverty and insecurity.

He urged the Northern elite, including politicians and businessmen, to move beyond the blame game and take decisive action to address these issues.

“I believe that as leaders of northern Nigerians, we must sit down, look at ourselves in the mirror, and ask ourselves the whole truth,” he told journalists.
