An airplane carrying 62 people crashed on Friday in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, according to firefighters and the airline Voepass.
While no official death toll has been confirmed, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested during an official event that it appears there were no survivors. “A plane just crashed in the city of Vinhedo in Sao Paulo, with 58 passengers and four crew members, and it seems that everyone died,” Lula stated during a speech in Itajai, Santa Catarina state.
The aircraft, which was en route from Cascavel in southern Parana state to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, was involved in what Voepass described as “an accident involving flight 2283.” The airline added, “There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”
Local media broadcast images showing a large plane nosediving at high speed and a significant column of smoke rising from the crash site, which appeared to be in a residential area.
The Sao Paulo Fire Department reported on social network X: “Aircraft crash, 7 teams involved, so far only this information.”
Vinhedo, a city with approximately 76,000 residents, is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.
