- The suspect, who was on France’s terrorist watchlist and subject to deportation orders, was arrested at the scene
A 37-year-old Algerian-born man went on a stabbing rampage in the eastern French city of Mulhouse on Saturday, killing one person and injuring several others in what President Emmanuel Macron described as an “Islamist terrorist act.”
The suspect, who was on France’s terrorist watchlist and subject to deportation orders, was arrested at the scene.
Authorities said he had a “schizophrenic profile” with a “psychiatric dimension” to his actions, according to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau.
Efforts to deport him had been stalled due to Algeria’s refusal to cooperate.
The attack occurred around 4 pm near a bustling market where demonstrators were rallying in support of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A 69-year-old Portuguese man was fatally wounded, while parking attendants and police officers were among the injured.
Two officers sustained serious injuries, with one suffering a carotid artery wound. The other officer, who was injured in the upper body, has since been discharged from the hospital. Three additional officers received minor injuries.
Prosecutors revealed that during the attack, the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest), a claim corroborated by witnesses.
President Macron affirmed the government’s resolve to “eradicate terrorism on our soil,” stressing that there was “no doubt” the attack was an act of Islamist terrorism.
