Four die inside sewage pit in Imo

In Imo State, at least four persons have lost their lives while attempting to evacuate feces from a sewage pit.

The incident, which happened at Umunwokoji Umuayalu village in Owerri North LGA the south east State, has plunged the locals into a state of despair and mourning.

There is an element of mystery to their deaths as the four workers were said to have entered into the pit one after the other but did not make it out alive.

It’s gathered that among the dead was a newly married man with a month old baby

A resident of the village, who spoke in confidence with newsmen, said the first person entered the well to evacuate the dungs but was unable to climb out.

“In an attempt to rescue him, the second person entered too, followed by the third and fourth persons, all of whom lost their lives under such mysterious circumstances,” the source said.

The remains of the four victims were later evacuated and deposited in the mortuary.

The cause of their deaths is yet to be ascertained.

An environmental engineer, Sunday Ihekire while commenting on the incident said, “This incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety protocols while embarking in such potentially hazardous activities.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.”
