Kwara: Mother, three children die after eating rice

  • The first born of the family, Abibat, was the first to die while the mother and two other children gave up the ghost in the early hours of Monday.

Four family members have reportedly died from food poisoning in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

They victims, which include a mother and her three children, were said to have passed away after eating suspected poisoned rice.

The tragic incident happened at Oshin Area, along Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin metropolis.

According to reports, the first born of the family, Abibat, was the first to die while the mother and two other children gave up the ghost in the early hours of Monday.

The other two deceased kids were identified as Zainab and Abdulfatah.

A source close to the family said, “they all ate rice on Saturday morning and after eating, the parents went out and returned home in the evening.

“When they came back, the first born was the one that started feeling weak and was rushed to hospital but she died in the hospital.

“The parents got back home at midnight and met the other two children vomiting; they were also rushed to hospital; on Sunday afternoon, the mother was rushed to the hospital too.

“Both of them, the mother and the remaining two kids died at midnight of Monday, 19th August, 2024.

“They died at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), and their corpses were brought home. We are preparing for their burial at the Muslims’ Cemetery, Ilorin, but their father is still in the hospital receiving treatment,” the family source added.

In recent times, cases of food poisoning related death have become rampant.

Earlier in August, five children died after eating farm food in Nasarawa.

Last week in Kano, a mother and her five children died after eating a local delicacy.

Two weeks ago , a mother and her five children died in Anambra state after eating a meal bought from a food vendor.
