The Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to begin arresting drivers and impounding vehicles that lack speed limit devices.
This was disclosed by the FRSC Sector Commander, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, during a press conference in Awka on Friday.
Alexander stated that the majority of road crashes in the state are caused by speed violations, leading to tyre bursts and loss of control.
She emphasized that the enforcement is necessary due to reckless speeding and overloading by drivers, often at the expense of safety.
“The policy thrust of the new Corps Marshal is to enhance operations and reduce road crashes and disobedience to traffic rules in Anambra,” she said, adding that defaulters will be fined and required to install the devices before their vehicles are released.
A joint task force will also be formed in collaboration with other agencies to ensure road safety during the ‘Ember’ months, with increased public awareness campaigns planned in partnership with the media.
