The head coach of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has revealed why his team lost to Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

The Cheetahs had edged out the Super Eagles 2-1 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in June this year.

But on Sunday, the three-time African champions routed their West African neighbours, beating them 3-0.

Ademola Lookman continued his tremendous form scoring in either half, while Victor Osimhen also got a goal at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Speaking about the game, Rohr said the Super Eagles came for revenge after the outcome of the match in Abidjan.

He also noted that the presence of some key players who were absent during the last encounter also player a pivotal role.

Rohr said: “We managed to beat them in Abidjan.

“It gave them extra motivation to seek revenge, which is normal.

“And at home, in addition, with the stars present today who weren’t there last time, captain Ekong, Aina and Osimhen made a difference.”
