  • INEC had declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressive Congress winner
  • PDP faults electoral processes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the Edo governorship election, which was held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressive Congress (APC) the winner of the election.

State returning officer Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta, who is also the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, said Okpebholo scored 291,667 votes while PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, got 247,274 votes, and Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata finished third with 22,763 votes.

The acting national chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, in a broadcast, at the Wadata Plaza national headquarters of the party on Monday, said the results declared by INEC did not reflect the true picture of the election saying Edo people voted for Ighodalo.

Damagum said the election did not meet the 2022 Electoral Act and INEC guidelines in accordance with the state election. He described the election as an assault on the democratic rights of Edo people, adding that the party will embrace legal means to retrieve its ‘stolen’ mandate.
