  • In February, Oluchi Oparah, national treasurer of the party, accused Abure of misappropriating N3.5 billion.
  • In April 2023, the FCT high court issued an order restraining Abure from parading himself as the national chair of the LP.

The caretaker committee of the Labour Party, led by Nenadi Usman, has announced plans to contest the court decision that recognized Julius Abure as the national chairman.

On Tuesday, federal high court judge Emeka Nwite confirmed the legitimacy of the Abure-led administration and the Nnewi convention from March 2024 that elected the party officials.

Nwite directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to acknowledge Abure as the rightful chair of the party.

In response to the ruling, Usman mentioned that the issue arose before the caretaker committee was established, which subsequently became part of the case after careful consideration.

“This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee),” Usman said in a terse statement.

“We deliberated on the judgment passed today. The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee.

“However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to join the case. Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly.”

Usman implored party members to exercise restraint and promote harmony amidst ongoing reconciliation efforts to foster unity and stability.
