The Lagos State Government has confirmed that its second rail project, the Red Line, will begin commercial operations on October 15, 2024.

In a statement signed by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), and posted on the agency’s social media handle, the Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, also confirmed the development.

Previously, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, told said that the Red Line, once fully operational, would work alongside the Blue Line to alleviate Lagos traffic by transporting between 100,000 and 150,000 passengers daily.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to lead his executive council and other dignitaries on the first passenger trip when the service is officially launched.

The Red Line services will commence daily at 6am from Agbado, adjusting from the previous schedule which began at 9am from Oyingbo. According to Mrs Akinajo, this new timetable is based on data collected during test runs and prioritises routes from Agbado, where many commuters reside and work in key areas such as Ikeja, Oshodi, and Lagos Island.

For passengers traveling to Lagos Island, buses will be available at the Oyingbo bus terminal to complete their journeys.
