- Musa urged Africans to break down barriers and foster better relationships, especially in trade and travel
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called for greater unity among African nations, condemning the treatment of fellow Africans attempting to cross borders on the continent.
Speaking at a dinner in Abuja on Friday, held in honour of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and his wife, Olori Atuwatse III, General Musa highlighted the hostile reception often faced by Africans travelling within the continent.
Reflecting on his travels across Africa, Musa expressed disappointment at the inhumane treatment of Africans by their neighbours.
“When you travel across Africa, the similarities are striking—we walk, talk, and act alike. Yet, the hostility at borders is disheartening. This is something that deeply pains me,” he said.
Musa urged Africans to break down barriers and foster better relationships, especially in trade and travel. “We do business with outsiders, but not with ourselves. We need to change that. Africans should be able to travel across borders and be received as family. That is how we will grow,” he added.
He further emphasised the importance of African self-reliance, stating, “As Africans, no one should speak for us. We must stand strong, bold, and speak for ourselves. We are the cradle of civilisation, and we must not be intimidated.”
In support of Musa’s call for unity, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, suggested the removal of trade barriers and the introduction of a single currency to promote intra-African commerce.
