  • Minister Nyesom Wike announced an investigation into the FCT Universal Basic Education Board due to transparency issues and management concerns
  • Wike emphasized the need for accountability, citing delays in appointing a director and lack of detailed reports on school renovations

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) is under investigation.

Wike disclosed this on Thursday while meeting with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) management, led by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Hamid Boboyi.

Wike expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the board’s activities, noting a lack of transparency and full briefing on its operations.

He stated, “We are not quite satisfied with what we saw on the board. There is no full briefing on its activities so far, and we cannot allow that.”

He further explained that part of the reason for the ongoing probe is the delay in appointing a substantive board director.

Wike added that while the FCT is renovating numerous schools, the board has yet to provide a detailed report on the schools it has renovated.

Earlier in the meeting, Dr. Boboyi requested the minister’s approval for UBEC’s application for land, submitted in 2021, for offices and housing for workers.

In response, Wike agreed but insisted that the board must first sign an agreement with the FCT Administration (FCTA) to demonstrate its financial capacity to begin development immediately and commit to a completion timeline.

He warned that failure to meet the terms would result in the revocation of the land allocation.

This investigation into the FCT UBEB reflects Wike’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in managing education-related projects in the FCT.
