  • For January to September 2024, the command generated N56.6 billion, reflecting a 7.85% rise compared to N52.2 billion collected in the same period last year

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, has announced the interception of various contrabands, including 8,850 litres of petrol and 168 sacks of fake medicaments, between August and September 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller, Dr Ben Oramalugo, revealed that the command also collected N23.9 billion in revenue during this period, representing a 27.5% increase from the N17.3 billion generated in the same period in 2023.

For January to September 2024, the command generated N56.6 billion, reflecting a 7.85% rise compared to N52.2 billion collected in the same period last year.

Dr Oramalugo credited the command’s success to enhanced compliance, enforcement, and monitoring efforts, despite economic challenges. He emphasized the command’s commitment to preventing revenue leakages and facilitating legitimate trade, particularly through excise factories within its jurisdiction.

In addition to revenue collection, the command seized 433 bags of foreign rice, 61 bales of second-hand clothing, 93 used tyres, and 49 sacks of cannabis weighing 744.9kg, among other items.

The contraband’s duty-paid value totaled N755 million. Oramalugo added that fake pharmaceutical drugs worth N596 million would be handed over to NAFDAC, while 49 sacks of cannabis valued at N46.9 million would be transferred to the NDLEA.

The controller noted that intensified border patrols and increased use of intelligence and technology have significantly disrupted smuggling activities in the region.
