  • The police spokesperson said that Sidi confessed during the investigation.
  • He added that the suspected was formally charged within 24 hours for inciting public disturbance, an offense under Nigerian law.

The Sokoto State Police Command has denied allegations of secretly arresting and prosecuting a woman who criticized the state’s rising violence.

In a statement, ASP Ahmad Rufai, the command’s spokesperson, addressed the misinformation spread by Gistcore Media and other social media platforms.

Rufai stated that the police discovered “false and misleading information” claiming they secretly arrested and charged a woman for speaking out against state violence.

“The story is entirely unfounded,” Rufai clarified. “Marafa Yakubu, Village Head of Sabon Birnin Daji, reported a case involving a woman inciting community unrest on Sunday.”

The woman, Hamdiyya Sidi, allegedly posed as a charitable organization member to support women and youth but instead incited residents against the government.

Recognizing potential disturbance, the village head alerted community guards, who apprehended Sidi and handed her over to the police.

Rufai noted that Sidi confessed during the investigation and was formally charged within 24 hours for inciting public disturbance, an offense under Nigerian law.

The Commissioner of Police urged citizens to verify information before sharing, warning that inaccurate reports harm community peace.

The Command remains committed to upholding citizens’ rights while fulfilling constitutional duties, Rufai emphasized.
