- The Coalition of Northern Groups warns of the new terrorist group Lakurawa in Kebbi and Sokoto, urging immediate government intervention
- Lakurawa is reportedly recruiting youths with financial incentives, posing a significant threat to safety and stability in the region
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has sounded the alarm over the emergence of a new armed terrorist group, known as Lakurawa, which has reportedly surfaced in the northwest Nigerian states of Kebbi and Sokoto.
The CNG urged the government to take immediate action to address the threat before it escalates further.
In a statement issued by CNG National Coordinator Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition called on local, state, and federal authorities, as well as community, religious, and traditional leaders, to join forces in confronting this new threat. Charanchi warned that if left unchecked, the group could pose a severe risk to safety and stability in an already fragile region.
Reports reaching the CNG suggest that Lakurawa is actively establishing itself in local communities, using tactics similar to those of other violent groups that have spread terror across the region.
The CNG emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the group has already begun disrupting communities and threatening lives and livelihoods.
The CNG also expressed particular concern that Lakurawa is recruiting young people by offering financial incentives, further exacerbating security challenges in a region already grappling with banditry, insurgency, and kidnappings.
In response, the CNG urged the federal government and security agencies to take proactive and decisive measures to combat the group in its early stages.
The coalition specifically called for a substantial increase in the number of troops currently deployed in the Northwest, stressing that the current force of about 13,000 is insufficient to address the growing security threat effectively.
The CNG also appealed to residents of Kebbi, Sokoto, and neighboring states to cooperate closely with security forces by providing information on suspicious activities, which is crucial for effective security operations.
