  • Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed in June that N20 billion had been allocated for metering unmetered Band A customers, who enjoy a minimum of 20-hour daily power supply

The Federal Government has commenced the phased distribution of over one million meters to Band A electricity customers.

According to sources, several distribution companies have received the meters for onward allocation to customers on Band A feeders.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed in June that N20 billion had been allocated for metering unmetered Band A customers, who enjoy a minimum of 20-hour daily power supply and pay N209.50 per kilowatt-hour after subsidy removal.

Adelabu stated that he had agreed with the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Alhaji Garba Sanusi, to release the funds for the purchase of meters, with the distribution process starting by September.

By the end of 2024, the government aims to install 3.5 million meters, including 1.5 million procured through World Bank support. Adelabu noted that while most meters would be sourced internationally, local manufacturers would also supply some, though their production capacity is limited.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to address metering gaps and improve revenue collection within Nigeria’s power sector.
