  • Speaker Mudashiru Obasa addressed speculation about his governorship ambitions, emphasizing his focus on strengthening the APC over personal political aspirations
  • Obasa acknowledged Nigeria’s economic struggles, urging citizens to remain optimistic as the government works towards economic recovery and growth

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa has addressed speculation about his potential bid for the governorship.

While he acknowledged he hasn’t given serious thought to running, he insisted he is neither too young nor inexperienced for the role.

Obasa made these remarks on Thursday after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the 2025 Lagos State budget of N3.01 trillion to the House of Assembly.

He clarified that his primary focus remains strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, with any governorship ambition being secondary.

“My focus has been mobilizing people under the platform of Mandate, which some political detractors have misinterpreted as a selfish pursuit for governorship,” Obasa stated.

“Our mission is to promote and solidify the APC. Becoming governor is secondary and not something I have seriously considered yet. However, that doesn’t mean I am too young or lack experience. Those who have held the position before me are not better qualified.”

Obasa also addressed rumours suggesting he sought validation from his blood relations in Ojo to support his alleged candidacy.

“I have never denied my ties to the Obasa family in Ojo, but I have never claimed any connection to prominent Lagos families like the Onikoyi or Oniru. If I decide to run, I will do so from Agege, without needing local validation,” he clarified.

Regarding the economy, Obasa acknowledged the struggles faced by Nigerians but urged hope as President Bola Tinubu’s administration works towards recovery.

“This budget presentation comes during a challenging economic period. I appeal to Nigerians to remain optimistic as the federal government continues efforts to rebuild the economy,” he concluded.

Obasa’s comments have fueled discussions about his potential governorship ambitions, even as he reiterates his commitment to party development over personal aspirations.
