  • Mali’s ruling junta appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as prime minister, replacing Choguel Kokalla Maiga after his criticism of the military government
  • The leadership change underscores ongoing political tension in Mali, which has been under military rule since coups in 2020 and 2021

Mali’s junta has appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as the new prime minister, replacing Choguel Kokalla Maiga, a civilian leader sacked after criticizing the military government.

The announcement came on Thursday, with General Assimi Goita, the junta leader, issuing a decree read on state television by the secretary general of the presidency.

Until his appointment, Abdoulaye Maiga served as the government’s spokesperson.

The move follows ongoing political tension in the West African nation, which has been under military rule since two successive coups in 2020 and 2021.
