Police in Anambra State have thwarted a kidnapping attempt linked to suspected members of a secessionist group, killing one suspect during a shootout.

Several others escaped with gunshot wounds, according to a statement released by the state’s police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday night along the Agulu-Nnobi Road when police operatives attached to a VIP convoy came under attack.

“Police operatives from the Operations Department of the Command and attached to a VIP demobilised one of the criminals and recovered a pump-action gun, five live cartridges, five machetes, two SUVs, and two pairs of desert shoes,” Ikenga said.

The assailants, travelling in two vehicles – a grey Lexus ES 330 and an ash-coloured Toyota Highlander – abandoned their cars and fled into the bush following the resistance by police and vigilante operatives.

In a separate operation, security forces rescued kidnapped victims in Dunukofia Local Government Area. The victims, abducted on Wednesday morning in Idemili North Local Government Area, were found in a vehicle abandoned by their captors after a pursuit.

“The kidnappers shot the victims when they realized they were being trailed,” Ikenga stated. “While one victim is responding to treatment, another was sadly confirmed dead at the hospital.”

Police recovered the vehicle and assured the public of ongoing operations to arrest the fleeing suspects. Authorities urged residents to report suspicious activities to aid their efforts in combating crime.
