  • Former Senator Shehu Sani linked persistent poverty and insecurity in northern Nigeria to poor education and ineffective leadership during a conference
  • Sani emphasized that education could have prevented many regional challenges, advocating for its role in empowering individuals and fostering peace

Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, has linked the persistent poverty and insecurity in northern Nigeria to poor education and ineffective leadership.

At the Kaduna Girl Child Conference and Award Ceremony organized by The Creative Think Tank on Saturday, Sani emphasized that education could have prevented many of the region’s current challenges.

He asserted that if those now involved in perpetuating insecurity had received education decades ago, the situation in the North would be vastly different.

The political activist pointed to the North’s rich resources, including arable land, rivers, and mineral deposits. However, he lamented that these resources remain underutilized due to a lack of proper leadership and strategic resource management.

Sani advocated for education as a transformative tool: “Education empowers individuals, liberates societies, and fosters peace and security. Without it, poverty and instability persist.”

In addition to addressing regional challenges, Sani commended efforts to support girls’ education and rights. “Today, we celebrate our girls in line with the United Nations declaration. We aim to see them flourish in a safe environment,” he said.

He also highlighted plans to empower 200 girls by 2025, with a vision to celebrate their achievements at the next conference.

The event honoured individuals who have significantly contributed to advocating for girls’ rights and creating safer spaces for them to thrive. Sani expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire positive change across the region.
