The Federal Government is set to establish a National Policy on Bullying to address the persistent issue of bullying in schools across Nigeria, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced on Wednesday.
Speaking in Abuja after a meeting with principals of Federal Government Unity Colleges, Dr. Alausa expressed concern over the increasing cases of bullying in secondary schools, which have sparked public outrage.
He assured Nigerians that the policy would be presented at the next National Council on Education meeting.
“We will not tolerate or accept any form of bullying in our schools or society. We are formalizing a comprehensive policy to address this menace and will take it to the highest policy-making organ in the country for adoption,” Alausa said.
He emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance approach to bullying and pledged to implement strict measures to ensure discipline and safety in schools.
To complement the policy, the minister announced plans for a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate students, teachers, and parents about the dangers of bullying and violence. The campaign will promote a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion.
Additionally, schools will be required to enforce stricter anti-bullying measures, including:
- Establishing functional guidance and counseling units.
- Strengthening disciplinary frameworks.
- Adopting and enforcing anti-bullying policies.
Dr. Alausa also highlighted the importance of leveraging the Safe Schools Act and other existing laws to combat bullying effectively.
The Minister revealed that the Federal Ministry of Education is working closely with the Attorney General’s office to finalize the National Policy on Bullying. Once completed, it will be presented to the National Council on Education for approval.
He assured that state governments would be actively involved in the implementation process, ensuring a unified approach to tackling bullying across the country.
“Our goal is to instill discipline, provide a safe learning environment, and foster mutual respect in our schools,” he added.
