Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State stated that the ₦80,000 minimum wage for state civil servants will only be implemented after a thorough verification exercise.
The governor clarified this during the 17th annual State Christmas Carol Service in Uyo, themed “Peace and Holiness with All Men.”
He emphasized that no industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) would pressure him into skipping the verification process.
Governor Eno also announced the payment of a 13th-month salary to civil servants. However, he clarified that the bonus would be calculated based on the existing salary structure until the verification process concludes.
“We have already calculated the 13th month and will pay based on the old salary structure. The new minimum wage will begin only after the verification exercise is completed,” Eno stated.
He stressed the importance of transparency in his administration, explaining that an accurate count of state civil servants is essential before implementing the new wage structure.
“No one can compel me to make payments without proper verification. The NLC is part of the verification committee, and once their report is submitted, payments will begin immediately,” he assured.
As part of the festive season, Governor Eno announced a Christmas relief package for the state’s 2,272 villages, with each receiving 20 bags of rice. He urged community leaders to ensure fair distribution, regardless of political affiliations.
“Hunger knows no party,” the governor remarked, emphasizing unity and equity during the holiday season.
The governor’s commitment to transparency and fairness highlights his administration’s focus on accountability while addressing the welfare of civil servants and residents alike.
